The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, Innovation Next
Sex Education Prototype, ISL
2017
Designer, Illustrator
GOAL: Using a sex-positive lens, design a prototype to educate and empower college-aged teens, helping prevent unplanned pregnancies during a pivotal time in their lives.
Concept
The It Kit helps newly autonomous young women to be prepared for any sexual situations they would want to engage in.
COMPONENTS
-
A subscription kit filled with safe-sex products, educational information, and conversational prompts/games to homes of teens.
-
The materials included in the kit evolve over time based on the user’s age and preferences.
-
A chatbot powered by AI that teens can anonymously communicate with via text message to get the answers and resources they need without barriers.
-
An optional parent integration to facilitate open, informed conversations between parents and teens.
PROCESS
IDEO Workshop
Lego Prototype
-
Concepted and created at the Innovation Next workshop by Maggie Winters and Margot Mausner
Informed Design
Audience Testing Sample
-
Emulating Birchbox, this paper prototype included stylistic components of materials that would then be tested with audiences while evolving the product.
Form and Function
Cardboard Prototype
-
Consideration of size and form, this cardboard rendition included scrappily created materials for what would be included.
-
Card deck
A custom-designed deck of cards, with each suit representing a distinct category of frequently asked questions: sex, body, STIs, and birth control. Each card featured a question on the back and a corresponding answer on the front, allowing the deck to function both as a traditional game and an engaging educational tool.
